As we look back at the past year, we would like to acknowledge those who have helped us shape our business. To our customers for their continued support and understanding during lockdown’s and the delays they may have caused. To our suppliers for their service and assistance during these challenging times. Our CEO and Director’s are also grateful to the THL team for their hard work over the past year.  

Tubman Heating Limited wishes our customers, suppliers and staff a wonderful and festive summer break. Our Auckland and Hamilton offices will be closed from Friday December 24th  2021 until reopening on Wednesday January 5th 2022.   After hours emergency break down assistance will continue over this period. Our Wellington branch will be closed for statutory holidays only.

We look forward to creating more heat with you in 2022.

Giving back to our community

Te Tāpui Atawhai
For more than 100 years Auckland City Mission has helped and continues to help those in need of services and support. This includes assistance with housing, feeding families and individuals and mental health assistance. Some people may need short term help or more long-term support.
Demand for support at Auckland City Mission – Te Tāpui Atawhai – is at an all-time high. Christmas can be a tough time of the year for many New Zealanders and because of Covid, this Christmas will be even harder for Aucklanders.
The Staff and Directors of Tubman Heating Limited have donated $20,000 to Te Tāpui Atawhai to help assist those struggling in our community and bring some much needed hari Kirihimete.
The Auckland City Mission can only provide support for those in greatest need with the help of generous organisations and people like Tubman Heating.  We are truly grateful for your gift, particularly as we lead into Christmas.   Thank you!

COVID-19 Protection Framework THL Update

100% vaccinated

On 3 December 2021 the New Zealand Government moved the whole of NZ into the Protection Framework (traffic light system) as part of the next stage of the COVID-19 response. On 15 December the boundary around Auckland and Port Waikato will ease, with certain restrictions. We need to be prepared to do what we can to minimise the extent of the spread of COVID-19. This includes being fully vaccinated and following public health advice.


Tubman Heating Limited’s staff are 100% vaccinated, and as an essential support business our staff have and will continue to adhere to strict health protocols including the use of PPE and maintaining social distancing as much as possible.

While Auckland is in RED our offices are open, with RED protocols in place. Visitors will be met at the office front door entry only. If you are a visitor and are unvaccinated please ensure you are wearing a mask, if you are fully vaccinated please be prepared to show your vaccine pass at the door. All visitors must sign in with the COVID Tracer App. If you are sick or unwell please stay home and contact Healthline on 0800 611 116.

Sitting down with our CEO Mike Buckley

Michael Buckley joined Tubman Heating Limited in September 2021, in the first stage of Auckland’s longest lockdown. After 3 months of virtual meetings with his new team, customers and suppliers, Mike is now able to meet one on one with the virtual faces he has come to know. We chat to Mike about his work experience, lockdown’s and goals for THL.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself?

I live and work on the North Shore of Auckland with my wife and two primary school-aged children that keep both my wife and me on our toes. I grew up in Canterbury, so follow the Crusaders and All Blacks rugby teams, please don’t hold that against me! I moved away from Christchurch over 25 years ago but still call it home. I have a long history of employment with specialist trade companies, spending 20 years working both in New Zealand and overseas for a fire protection company. One of the things you learn when travelling is you need to be agile, and your management style needs to be flexible due to ethnic and cultural diversities within your workforce. For anyone who is looking to advance their careers; working and living overseas provides an opportunity to learn new and interesting ways of managing a workforce and helps to make you a well-rounded manager of people.

2. Why did you join THL?

Tubman Heating offered a great opportunity for me to take the next step in my career. Having total accountability for a business was both scary and exciting at the same time. I had previously worked alongside Tubman Heating while working at Ventia and the culture and the way the two directors, Chris and Jim, managed the business was a great fit for me. Also moving back into a specialist trade industry felt like the most logical thing to do.

3. What do you feel is THL’s biggest strength right now?

Tubman Heating has a depth of knowledge that is second to none in the boiler industry. This team really knows its stuff. We have good solid processes in place and have Telarc ISO9001 quality and 5 Star Prequal H&S certification as recognition of our success. We have many products that we source directly from internationally recognised manufacturers but also good local knowledge to ensure we comply with all New Zealand standards for installation, servicing and maintenance. One of the key advantages that I see from Tubman Heating is the commitment to our customers and the drive to move clients from a reactive maintenance mindset to a planned preventative mindset.

Another strength within Tubman Heating is the respect and inclusion of the staff that work for us by our managers and directors. The directors care for the Tubman Heating team and see them as an extension of their own family. It is refreshing to have directors who truly care for the well-being of all our staff.

4. What is your goal for THL?

One of the challenging aspects of taking over a successful business is, “where to from here?” The key to any successful business is having a plan and working closely with the directors on agreed goals and a shared vision for the business. Over the last three months, the directors and I have been working on a strategy for the future, including looking at new technology that will move our industry away from reliance on fossil fuels to replacement fuels including hydrogen, wood pellet, bio and electrical sources of energy. Tubman Heating as a responsible corporate citizen is looking at its carbon footprint and has started down the path of leasing hybrid and electric vehicles. We also recently replaced our Auckland LPG forklift with a new electric forklift. Our goal over the next 3 years is, where possible, to move our fleet to electric vehicles and our customers away from fossil fuels.

Health and Safety is always at the front of mind. We are continuously developing ways to make it easier for our teams in the field to log and report safety interactions. The boiler industry is surrounded by hazards including gas, pressurised vessels, electricity and heat. We always need to be vigilant and continually improve our health and safety culture so that everyone goes home safely.

Our growth over the last number of years has been significant and through both organic and acquisitions, we will look to continue this growth in the coming years.

5. How has the lockdown in Auckland and Waikato affected THL?

One of the most challenging aspects of taking over running Tubman Heating was that I started this role on the 1st of September, right in the middle of a lockdown. Key to running any business is understanding your staff and what motivates them. This was challenging from in front of a computer screen. Through regular catch-up conversations over MS Teams and phone calls, I now have a good understanding of the team and how they operate. During level 4 Auckland was very quiet and our revenue numbers were significantly lower than forecast, this was not unexpected. During level 3 in both Auckland and Waikato, we had customers requesting maintenance and project works which helped us through. One of the advantages of having multiple branch locations is that although our Auckland business was slower than normal our Wellington and Waikato businesses have continued to operate as normal reducing the impact of the lockdown to some extent.

It was wonderful to gain insight into what motivates our CEO and we look forward to working with Mike to develop Tubman Heating Limited throughout New Zealand.

Pandemic Policy and Vaccination Updates November 2021

Tubman Heating Limited is committed to providing safe work practices for our customers including any health and wellbeing requirements during the current pandemic.

Our pandemic policy states:

Tubman Heating is committed to keeping its people safe.  To help people feel safe working at our facilities we have a policy of only allowing access to fully vaccinated people (staff, customers, contractors and suppliers).   We also insist that only fully vaccinated staff and contractors can work on Tubman Heating customers’ work sites.

As of 23 November 2021 all Tubman Heating Limited staff are 100% vaccinated. All THL staff including contractors, will be required to carry proof of vaccination to present to customers for entry onto their sites. In compliance with current policy if our staff must travel across any COVID border they will fully comply with the testing requirements in place.

Reilly Katene shares his journey into employment at Tubman Heating through a trades training apprenticeship scheme of Te Hoe Ākau. Mahi Toa provides on-going support and mentoring through the apprenticeship journey and contributes to Iwi vision and aspiration to increase the skill of Ngāti Toa Rangatahi.

Mahi Toa is not only a pathway for our youth but for businesses to grow their employee base with skilled and driven staff that feel encouraged and supported by their community and employer. Reilly has been able to go out on stand alone jobs after just 4 months, 2 months sooner than expected. We recommend Mahi Toa to other employers looking for a positive apprenticeship programme experience.

Tubman Heating achieves 5-star IMPAC prequalification mark

Tubman Heating Limited believes that its workers, employees or contractors, should not be harmed due to any process undertaken on behalf of the company. To achieve this, we have developed a comprehensive system of processes designed to keep our workers free from harm.

To test the voracity of our systems, we have undertaken prequalification via IMPAC, a world-class provider of workplace health and safety solutions. IMPAC helps businesses to improve their systems and processes surrounding health & safety and compliance.  They provide a full range of health and safety services — consulting and advice, training, safety management software, and contractor pre-qualification.

Over recent years we have managed to improve our IMPAC prequalification mark from 40% to 90%.

One of the primary aims of any business is to keep its workers safe. The owners of Tubman Heating are proud to announce that recently the business achieved 5 stars in the Prequalification Safety Audit completed by IMPAC, the highest possible ranking.  This means that we have put in place the necessary steps to reduce harm from any tasks undertaken by our workers.

We want our staff, contractors, sub-contractors, clients, suppliers and visitors to go home at the end of each day able to do what-ever they enjoy. Something every business should strive for!

Tubman Heating Limited is Expanding

After 30+ years in Auckland, Tubman Heating Limited is excited to have moved into the Wellington region through the acquisition of Devham Services.

Devham Services is a Lower Hutt-based company specialising in combustion & heating. The Devham Services crew has been helping to serve regional and national organisations for over 30 years by providing specialised local services and by selling boilers, burners, valves and a myriad of other equipment and spare parts throughout the country.   We’re excited to be working with experts that parallel the expertise of the rest of our team.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to staff at Devham Services and say a special ‘thank you’ to the previous owners, Sharron and Alan Hamilton, who are stepping back after many years of hard work. We wish both of you all the very best!

But there’s more!  Tubman Heating is also setting up shop in Hamilton. We will re-locate one of our top technicians to the area from mid-October 2018 to better service existing Waikato and Bay of Plenty customers and to hopefully build some new relationships!

These initiatives are part of our continued dedication to provide prompt, safe, and technically sound combustion and heating solutions for New Zealand industry and commerce. Establishment of regional bases will help us support more organisations across the North Island with the best possible service.
